Biografie
Chris WiersmaChris Wiersma graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a B.A. in Media & Culture and an LL.M. in Information Law. During his B.A. studies his interests focused mainly on film theory and the preservation of culture. He concluded his LL.M. with a thesis that was incorporated into a report, edited by Prof. Jan Kabel and Dr. Gerard Mom, on a legislative proposal for the revision of the Suriname Copyright Act. The report was presented to the Ministry in Suriname in October 2008.
Chris has worked for the Education, Policy and Quality Department at the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam. He was tutor of several groups on the Studiepracticum, a first-year course which develops academic skills for law students. He was also a staff member of the administrative team which organised the Columbia Summer Program in American Law (2009 Session), a cooperative project between the law faculties of New York (Columbia University), Leiden and Amsterdam.
Since 2007, Chris has been an editorial member of the documentation section of Mediaforum, the Dutch media and communication law journal. He is currently contributing to a study - a survey of press freedom - under the auspices of the Dutch foundation, Persvrijheidsfonds. The study focuses on developments in the field of freedom of speech and the press in the Netherlands since 2009.
As a researcher at IViR, Chris worked on a research project about the duties and responsibilities of Internet Service Providers in respect to different themes. At the moment Chris is working in the fields of Copyright, Media- and Communications law, and Journalistic Ethics at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, section Communication Sciences, at the University of Ghent (UGent).
